Unfortunately, your resident fake, masked-hero doesn't even know the origin of his comic-book disguise. Zorro (which in Spanish means Fox) first appeared in All Story Weekly in 1919 in a story called 'The Curse of Capistrano'. He didn't appear on the silver screen until 12 months later when the character was played by Douglas Fairbanks.
Due to the popularity of the film, 60 more Zorro stories were written by Johnston McCulley, all of these appeared in pulp magazines and dime novels.

IBOFB's moniker is not Zorro, but Dread Pirate Roberts, who ironically is a fraud.

Pirates, although subject of 'romantic' lore, were murderous thieves deserving rightly to be swung from the gallows. This fellow Steadson, the supposedly romanticized IBOFB, the Swedish Swindler, promoter of fraud; although not deserving of the yard-arm, is deserving of a long prison sentence for intentionally promoting a swindle in behalf of his criminal masters in the US. They collectively are deserving of long prison sentences.
